Open Nucleus Breeding System (ONBS)

Working with its affiliate, the Sabarmati Ashram Gaushala in Bidaj, Gujarat, the National Dairy Development Board operates an  Open Nucleus Breeding System (ONBS) project for Sahiwal X Holstein Friesian crossbreds since 1994. Bulls are evaluated under a nucleus breeding scheme using Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer as an alternative to progeny testing.

The Open Nucleus Breeding System offers the advantage of testing bulls under controlled farm conditions.

Since under ONBS sires and dams are evaluated on the basis of their sib performance and not on their progeny programme, such evaluations accelerate genetic gain as the generation interval goes down.

Significant Results

Seventy genetically evaluated, superior crossbred bulls are available as a result of  the ONBS programme.  NDDB will provide the breeding values of these 70 bulls and their semen can be purchased.
