The demand for milk is now growing much faster. Emerging trends indicate that milk demand is likely to be in the range of 200 to 210 million tonnes by 2021-22. Unless milk production increases at the pace required there is a possibility of a widening gap in supply of milk and the dependence on imports would increase. Taking into consideration the above, it is imperative that a scientifically planned multi-state initiative is launched at the earliest with a focus to improve milch animal productivity and increase milk production to meet the rapidly growing demand for milk through a focussed approach to breeding and feeding.
