Karyotyping

Chromosomal abnormalities in domestic animals are one of the most important causes of reproductive impairment that leads to loss of germplasm. It is one of the causes of a decrease in animal’s reproductive quality, there by inflicting substantial economic losses. Analysis of the chromosomes in breeding stock prevents the transmission of chromosomal abnormalities and timely culling of affected bulls. It is obviously a wise policy to ensure that the breeding bulls, particularly those used in A.I. Centers, are free from deleterious chromosomal abnormalities. Numerical and structural changes are two main types of chromosomal abnormalities commonly found in animals.

The Method involves Lymphocyte culture of the fresh blood –Harvesting of chromosomes and slide preparation – Microscopic analysis and Interpretation.
